Hogwarts Harry Potter
No one made Hogwarts more famous than Harry Potter, the Boy Who Lived. Harry attended Hogwarts from the age of 11 and spent 6 years as a student there. Hogwarts soon became Harry Potter's second home. At Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Harry met and grew close to his best friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. Harry was sorted into Gryffindor House. Together with his friends, Harry experienced one adventure after another at Hogwarts, from rescuing the Philosopher's Stone, discovering the Chamber of Secrets, to winning the Triwizard Tournament. Interestingly, due to the rise of the Dark Lord, Lord Voldemort, Harry never formally completed his education at Hogwarts.
History and Founding of Hogwarts
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was founded by four wizarding friends: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Salazar Slytherin, and Rowena Ravenclaw. Hogwarts was established in the 10th century and, along with Beauxbatons, Durmstrang, and Ilvermorny, is one of the most prestigious wizarding schools in the world. Hogwarts was built in the Scottish Highlands. The location and name of Hogwarts were given by founder Rowena Ravenclaw, who was guided to the spot by a vision of a wild boar (the Hogwarts beast) in her dream, leading her to the Scottish Highlands.
Each founder of Hogwarts established their own house, selecting young witches and wizards to teach and perfect their magical skills. Godric Gryffindor founded Gryffindor House, Salazar Slytherin founded Slytherin House, Helga Hufflepuff founded Hufflepuff House, and Rowena Ravenclaw founded Ravenclaw House. The four founders initially lived and taught in peace and harmony. However, Salazar Slytherin began to diverge, insisting on pure-blood wizards and refusing to teach Muggle-born children. The other founders disagreed with Salazar, leading to a confrontation between Salazar and Godric. After this dispute, Salazar Slytherin permanently left Hogwarts. However, he managed to hide his Chamber of Secrets within the school, where a terrifying monster awaited, intended to purge the school of all Muggle-born students once and for all.
Hogwarts Crest
Just as each Hogwarts House has its own emblem, so does Hogwarts itself. The Hogwarts crest features four animals representing each house: a lion for Gryffindor, a serpent for Slytherin, a badger for Hufflepuff, and an eagle for Ravenclaw. In the center of the crest is a large letter H, representing Hogwarts. Below the crest is the Latin motto Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus, which loosely translates to Never tickle a sleeping dragon.
The Battle of Hogwarts
The climactic event of the Harry Potter series is the famous Battle of Hogwarts. The final battle between good and evil took place on May 2, 1998, and this day is traditionally celebrated as International Harry Potter Day. You can read more about the Battle of Hogwarts in our article here. Harry Potter went to Hogwarts to find and destroy the remaining Horcruxes (specifically Rowena Ravenclaw's diadem and Lord Voldemort's snake, Nagini). After Harry, Hermione, and Ron successfully found and destroyed the diadem using a Basilisk fang, which was destroyed by Slytherin's Vincent Crabbe, Voldemort realized his weakness and it seemed for a moment that he might decide to completely obliterate Hogwarts. Harry willingly went to Voldemort and allowed himself to be killed, which destroyed the Horcrux that Voldemort had embedded in Harry. Neville Longbottom managed to pull Godric Gryffindor's sword from the Sorting Hat and kill Nagini, the final Horcrux of Lord Voldemort. The battle eventually moved to the Great Hall, where the Death Eaters fell one by one, leaving only Voldemort. Harry finally defeated him with his signature spell Expelliarmus. Thus, Harry Potter ended the Second Wizarding War and established peace in the wizarding world for a long time.
