Platform 9 3/4
Do you know what’s even better for a young wizard than receiving his acceptance letter to Hogwarts? Traveling on the Hogwarts Express! Every year, students receive a golden ticket and on September 1st, they board the legendary Platform 9¾. For wizards from Muggle families, it can be challenging— the platform is hidden from Muggle eyes. The entrance is concealed in the stone wall between Platforms 9 and 10. To reach the platform, you must run at the wall, or at least walk briskly. Don’t worry, you won’t crash—except for one incident in Harry Potter’s second year, when the house-elf Dobby spoiled it. On the other side of the barrier between Platforms 9 and 10 awaits Platform 9¾, where the red Hogwarts Express, billowing steam, is waiting. Young witches and wizards say goodbye to their families and board the train with their trunks and permitted pets, which include owls, cats, rats, or toads. The train departs precisely at 11 o'clock heading towards Hogwarts.
King's Cross Station, where the platform is located, holds a special place in author J.K. Rowling’s heart. It’s reportedly the place where J.K. Rowling’s parents met, and perhaps that’s why the station has such a magical atmosphere. However, the author originally envisioned the Hogwarts Express departing from another station—Euston.
The first journey on the Hogwarts Express is crucial for new students. Friendships for a lifetime are forged, as Harry Potter experienced when he met Ron Weasley, who offered him a seat in his compartment. Ron was fascinated by Harry’s fame, while Harry was discovering the world of magic. Thus, a strong friendship was formed.
And what’s the best part of the train ride? The food! During the journey, an older lady with a cart full of treats comes around. Harry was enchanted by Chocolate Frogs, Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans, and other magical snacks, and he immediately took some of each. He even shared his goodies with Ron. On the train, they also met Hermione Granger, forming the famous trio. Not everyone, however, forms friendships— for example, Harry and Draco Malfoy managed to become enemies on their very first trip.
On the Hogwarts Express, only students, the conductor, and the lady with the cart travel. Exceptions are situations where professors join them, as with Professor Lupin in the third year.
Before arriving at Hogwarts, the train slows down and announces: “In five minutes we will arrive at Hogwarts, please leave your luggage on the train.” The first-years are greeted by Keeper of Keys Hagrid, who leads them to the lake, where they get a stunning view of the castle. At the lake, small boats are waiting to take them across to where their magical year begins.
Older students ride in carriages drawn by Thestrals— invisible creatures only seen by those who have witnessed death. Whether it’s your first time or the umpteenth time, it’s always the beginning of a magical school year.
