History of Hufflepuff
The Hogwarts House Hufflepuff, like the other three Hogwarts houses Gryffindor, Slytherin, and Ravenclaw, was founded in the mid-10th century by four friendly witches and wizards. Specifically, Hufflepuff was founded by the witch known as Helga Hufflepuff.
Helga Hufflepuff
Helga Hufflepuff was a Welsh witch born in 993. The main difference between Helga and the other Hogwarts founders (Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, and Rowena Ravenclaw) was that Helga admitted all students into her house without distinction and without any special abilities. Helga was known for her hard work and loyalty, which she also valued in her students. Her closest friend was Rowena Ravenclaw, founder of Ravenclaw House. One of Helga's greatest traits was her cooking skills and love for food. Her recipes are still followed at Hogwarts today, and the house-elves have prepared many feasts using them. It was Helga who brought house-elves to work in the Hogwarts kitchen, not as slaves, but to hide them from evil witches and wizards who wished to exploit them. At Hogwarts, she provided them with an environment where they could feel safe and could not be abused. Helga owned the Hufflepuff Cup, a golden cup that later became one of the Horcruxes of Lord Voldemort.
Hufflepuff Traits
Helga Hufflepuff was known for her kindness, hard work, and dedication, and she valued these traits in her students. The main traits of Hufflepuff students are hard work and loyalty. Hufflepuffs are known for their good hearts and openness. Hufflepuffs treat everyone as equals and do not consider themselves superior to anyone.
Notable Hufflepuff Characters
The Hogwarts House Hufflepuff is not as well-known as, for example, Gryffindor or Slytherin, but it has had some notable witches and wizards such as Cedric Diggory, who was ruthlessly murdered on the orders of Lord Voldemort, Zacharias Smith, captain of the Hufflepuff Quidditch team and member of Dumbledore's Army, Susan Bones, Hannah Abbott, who later married Neville Longbottom, Nymphadora Tonks, wife of Remus Lupin, and Newton Scamander, known from the Fantastic Beasts series.
The Hufflepuff House Ghost: The Fat Friar
The ghost of Hufflepuff House is none other than the Fat Friar. Unlike the Bloody Baron, the ghost of Slytherin House, the Fat Friar does not appear frightening and is very friendly. The Fat Friar attended Hogwarts at its founding and was a very kind and religious wizard. His kindness eventually cost the Fat Friar his life. The Fat Friar was executed on the orders of the chief priest who noticed that the Fat Friar was healing the sick by "nudging" them with a wooden wand.
Hufflepuff Crest
The Hufflepuff crest is black and yellow, and its main feature is the badger. Below the crest is the English inscription Hufflepuff, or Mrzimor in Czech.
